Sandy was born in Canada in 1838 and came to Helena in 1871, working as a blacksmith. On May 27, 1886, he died from consumption after a lingering illness. He left a wife, Nora, and five young children behind in destitute circumstances. The funeral took place from the residence on lower Clore Street. (Helena Independent, 5/28/1886) Commissioner Pope ordered the following from Herrmann & Co: cloth coffin, rough box, digging of grave by Schmidt, total $20.00, paid by the county.
