ERNEST ANDERSON, JR
Ernest Harvey Anderson, Jr. was born October 23, 1918 to Ernest and Ethel (Hunt) Anderson at 402 N. Birch Street in Yuma. "Ernie attended Yuma's North primary and West elementary schools. In 1932 at age 14, he joined the Yuma First Presbyterian Church choir where he remained a local member for over 50 years. In 1934, Ernie and friend Garland Harper sang Saturday mornings on local radio station KGEK. On the day he graduated from Yuma High School in 1936, a famous Depression-era dust storm cut short the day's festivities.
"Ernie worked for a year at his father's Yuma Lumber Company, then enrolled at the University of Colorado. ...........
"One month after graduation from CU, Ernie married his high school sweetheart Coleen Myers on June 29, 1941. Reverend W. L. Breckenridge officiated and Miss Betty Hoch sang "Always." To this union two children were born: Beverly and Robert.
"Ernie began his student teaching at Lafayette Junior High School, taught 5th and 6th grades for one year at Joes, then completed another year at a country school northwest of Yuma.
"After receiving basic training at Lincoln Air Base in Nebraska, Ernie served during World War II in the Mediterranean theater of operations with Army Air Forces Engineer Command from April 1, 1944 to January 23, 1946. He received the ranking of Sergeant.
"After returning home to start a family, Ernie began teaching at Yuma West Grade School in 1947, taking time in the summers to earn a Master's Degree in Education at Colorado State College in Greeley. He was Principal at Yuma West Grade School from 1954 to 1969, then taught Junior High classes until his retirement 1981.
"Ernie was a 50-year Charter member of the Yuma Lion's Club, ........ He was a 50-year member of the Yuma Masonic Lodge. Ernie served on the County Federal Credit Union Advisory Board ......, was past President of the Yuma County Teachers Association and was listed in "Who's Who in Colorado" 1958-1967 editions. He felt blessed to share summer vacations with his family and traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Alaska with Coleen and friends.
"Ernie's valuable gifts of kindness, friendliness and wonderful musical talent will be greatly missed by all who knew him. ......
