Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Bart Cleo Anderson, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, March 23, 2009. He passed away peacefully of heart failure while sleeping at his home in St. George, Utah. Bart was born March 8, 1943, in Burley, Idaho, to Sherman Otto and Eva Yeaman Anderson.
After serving a mission for the LDS Church in Scotland, Bart married Marsha Mouritsen (later divorced), and together they had four children. On September 6, 1983, he married his sweetheart, Delorice Harvill, whom he called "the wind beneath my wings." They were later sealed in the St. George Temple.
Contracting polio at the young age of three did not dissuade Bart from earning his Eagle Scout Award, joining the Navy Coastguard and becoming one of Southern Utah's most prominent hiking experts. His countless awards and accomplishments earned him the title "Ranger Bart" and he has also been called "one of Dixie's greatest natural resources."
Before and after joining the medical field to become a Hematologist and Medical Examiner, Bart's adventurous youth was filled with escapades of flying, hang-gliding, skydiving, hiking the Grand Canyon and sailing the Great Salt Lake. His adventures continued throughout his life, and his influence in the hiking community has led to a trail being named in his honor at Sun River.
Bart's love for the people of Dixie was unsurpassed, as you would hear on his answering machine: "Please, please be kind to each other."
He is survived by his best friend and wife Delorice; stepmother Eiko; former wife Marsha Kaniakas; sons Todd (Sandy), Tony, and Tyler (Shannon); daughter Tara (Rick) Andersen; brother Paul (Barbara); sisters Kristine (Ken) Willson, Karla (Richard) Phelps, and Kathy (Robert) Clark; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way. He is preceded in death by his parents Sherman and Eva Anderson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 11:00 am at the St. George 16th Ward Chapel, 550 E. 700 S., St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held on Friday, March 27, from 6-9 pm at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah. A second viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services on Saturday. Interment will take place in the St. George City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in behalf of his wife, Delorice Anderson, at any Wells Fargo Bank.
Friends and family are invited to offer condolences at www.memoriesofbartanderson.blogspot.com which has been set up to honor Bart's life.
