Ben married Mamie Weir on Feb 12, 1912. Ben was a farmer and grain elevator manager. He raised prize-winning cattle. There's a story of Ben in family lore that both speaks to his character and sense of humor. When his wife's nephew Wesley Nelson was a young boy, he was an eye witness to a automobile accident that frightened him so terribly he came home afterwards and hid behind a stove. Wesley seemed touched for a long while by what he had seen, so much that his family was beginning to grow concerned for him. One day, though, Uncle Ben arrived at the house and invited all the children to come over to his place to see a surprise he had made just for them. During the walk, Ben held his tongue and allowed the suspense to build, allowing the children's mind to race though all the possibilities. But when he turned a corner around his barn and got first clear view of his pasture, they saw something there that was likely none of them could ever have imagined. It was a calf, tethered and grazing, which Ben had painted, head to hoof, a most unflattering shade of bright blue. ( story by Jean, Ben's niece)
