Dr. Robert C. Anderson, Montreat College Founder, Dies at 91; Funeral Tomorrow
MONTREAT, Feb. 21 (AP) - Dr. Robert Campbell Anderson, founder of Montreat College, died here at his home last night. He was 91.
Dr. Anderson came to Montreat in 1911 as president and manager of the Mountain Retreat Assn., a religious and educational institution of the Southern Presbyterian Church. He was a prime mover in developing Montreat as an assembly and conference ground for the denomination.
It was in 1916 that he founded a school for girls, serving as its president. It later became Montreat College.
Dr. Anderson was born near Martinsville, Va., graduating from Union Theological Seminary in 1887. He received a bachelor's degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1890. He also did graduate work at Free Church College and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1895 and 1896.
He was ordained a minister of the Presbyterian Church, U. S., in 1890 and served pastorates at San Antonio, Tex.; Roanoke, Va.; Shelbyville, Tenn., and Gastonia, N. C., before moving to Montreat.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sadie Anderson. His first wife, the former Katie P. Walter, died in 1892. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Gaither Chapel here. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. in Charlotte's Elmwood Cemetery.
