Capt. Joseph O'Neal Anderson was promoted to Glory on March 13, 2010 while in the hospital at Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Joe, along with his wife, my niece Melissa RIEFER Anderson, had served as an officer in The Salvation Army since 1989 with appointments in Oklahoma, Georgia, and Tennessee. His last active appointment was as Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Joe was born in Lubbock, Texas and was raised in the Midwest. He attended college at the University of Kansas and the Wichita State University. He was a member of the "Ambassadors for Christ" session at The Salvation Army's School for Officer's Training in Atlanta, Georgia.
Joe was married to his beloved wife, Melissa, for 18 years and they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Brie, age 14 and Meagan, age 13. They had made their home in Duluth, Georgia for about the last nine months of his life. Joe will always be remembered for his compassionate ministry and for his love of music, sports, friendships, and his tremendous love for his family.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Major John Anderson.
Besides Joe's wife and children, he was survived by his step-mother (Ret.) Major Georgia Anderson of Indianapolis, Indiana and his mother-in-law, (Ret.) Major Maxine ARNOLD Riefer. Also, among his survivors were his sisters, Dora and Nancy and his brothers, John, Mike, Jimmy, Chad, and Mark. He was, also, survived by his extended family and friends too numerous to even count.
A celebration of Joe's life was held at The Salvation Army Lawrenceville, Georgia Corps on March 16, 2010 with his interment following at the Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
Joe was much loved and is so missed by all. But, he now sings in Heaven's choir with the angels. Joseph Anderson died at age 46.
