Dr. Edward Lowell Anderson III, 87, of 705 Plume St., Spartanburg, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at the Greenville Care Assisted Living after an extended illness.

A native of Tryon, N.C., he was the son of the late Edward Lowell Anderson II and Winifred Lyon Anderson of Tryon and Grosse Ile, Mich.

He was a graduate of Cranbrook School for Boys in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Michigan in 1937. The following year he received his Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in English from New York University where he taught for several years. He also taught at Brooklyn College and later worked for the Educational Testing Service at Princeton University.

Dr. Anderson taught and served as chairman of the English Department at Mansfield State College and taught at Indiana University of PA. While in PA, he was active in the PA College English Association and served as president for a year as well as being active in other professional organizations. His published works include a textbook for fifth grade students, several articles for English journals and other scholarly papers.

He was granted emeritus status from Indiana University of PA and the PCEA and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Pi Chapter.

Upon retiring to South Carolina in 1979, he joined the Episcopal Church of the Advent, was an active member of the Golden "K" Kiwanis having served as president, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and the Shepherd's Center where he enjoyed giving programs for several years.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Sams Anderson of the home; one sister, Susan Anderson Scarcella of Roseville, Mich.; one brother-in-law, Mortimer R. Sams Jr. of Spartanburg; one sister-in-law, Mary Frances Sams Windham of Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Advent conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Brown. Committal services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 til 1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the Parlor in Pendleton Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Advent Foundation, 141 Advent St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, The St. Luke Free Medical Clinic, 162 Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302 or to The Shepherd's Center, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.

The family will be at the home at 705 Plume St.
