Joseph "Joe" Willis Anderson Jr., age 97, of Knoxville, died peacefully on Monday morning, May 4, 2009, at the home of his daughter, Harriet Schlank.
Born on July 4, 1911, to Fannie Chamness Anderson and Joseph Willis Anderson Sr. on Glenn Avenue in Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Cecelia Mynatt Anderson; son, John Michael "Mike" Anderson; daughter, Patricia Jo "Pattie" Anderson Bright; brothers, Raymond, Thornberg and Carl Anderson; and sister, Mildred Anderson Burnette.
Survivors include his daughter, Becky Sherrod and husband, Tom; daughter, Harriet Schlank and husband, Fares; daughter-in-law, Brenda Anderson; grandchildren, Dr. Greg Anderson, Joey Anderson and wife, Kristi, Kevin Bright, Kellie Bright Frazier and husband, Tom, Becky Bright, Jill Sherrod Lomenick and husband, Jeff, Mike Sherrod and wife, Trish, Evan Schlank, and Christian Schlank; great grandchildren, Haley Anderson, Ragan and Rylee Anderson, Davis and Reece Lomenick, and Tyler Sherrod.
Joe graduated from Knoxville High School in 1930, and completed three years in accounting at the University of Tennessee. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while in high school and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge.
He co-owned the first privately-owned building on land leased by the government in Oak Ridge (Woodland Shopping Center) and later started his own grocery business as Anderson's Hilltop Market on North Illinois Avenue. Joe and his wife, Cecelia, resided in Oak Ridge for about 30 years before moving to their home on Watts Bar Lake in Kingston. Joe was past president of Oak Ridge Rotary Club (1971-1972), sponsor of the Oak Ridge Boys Club, and an avid University of Tennessee supporter and fan. With his wife Cecelia, he enjoyed many years of traveling, working in his yard, and growing roses, zinnias and vegetables. He was a gentle man with a kind, loving spirit. Joe had many wonderful sayings including: "There's no substitute for hard work" and "The first hundred years are the hardest." The family would like to thank Dr. Alan Rice and his nursing staff, the loving, supportive staff from Caris Hospice, and the wonderful caregivers at C.A.D.E.S adult enrichment program.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Celebration of Life to follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. A private graveside service will be held Thursday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
