Fifty-five year Chico resident, Abner Idwall Andersen, passed away at age 90 in his daughter's Portland, Oregon home on Oct., 10, 2007. Abner was born to Olaf and Selma Hakvaag (Andersen) in Frontier, Sask., Canada, Nov. 23, 1916. He learned the building trade after the family immigrated to Los Angeles. He graduated from LIFE Bible College at Angelus Temple. During World War II Abner built military bases in the Aleutian Islands. In 1946, Abner married longtime church friend and pianist Mary Virginia McIntosh. They were married 60 years and had four children, Lauri, Teresa, Constance, Eric.

As a builder Abner restored several of Chico's historic homes and was known for his woodworking craftsmanship. He promoted the Chico community through volunteer service. He served on the board of the Salvation Army, advised the Fellowship of Christian Athletes CSUC, and started the Northern California FGBMFI. He also nurtured the Springs of Living Water Conference Center, Richardson Springs at its inception, and was active in State and local politics. Abner was best known as designer, builder and promoter of the Chico Outdoor Singing Christmas tree. The phenomena of the Chico Tree is international in countries such as India, Australia and Japan.

Abner was a spirited man of integrity and Christian character who was unafraid to sacrifice for others benefit. He was the Father of many ministries whose work is ongoing.
