On Sept. 10, 1961, he married Bonita Presnell of Deshler, NE.
Merlyn grew up near Ruskin, NE. He was baptized at Salem Lutheran Parsonage and confirmed at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran in Ruskin.
Merlyn started his education in a one-room schoolhouse, District 2, for his first couple of years of school. He graduated from Ruskin High School in 1958. He was valedictorian of his class. Merlyn lettered in both six-man football and basketball in all four years of high school.
Merlyn went to work for AT&T and retired after 18 years in Kansas City, Mo., so he could be closer to his children and grandchildren. Merlyn and Bonita moved back to Nebraska, and he had a second career in the cellphone industry.
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last September.
Merlyn loved following his grandchildren and never missed a dance recital or sporting event. He enjoyed fishing, going to the area car races and traveling to warm climates in the winter. He recently joined the Thayer County Ikes Club.
This past year, he bonded with his granddog, Riley. They walked together daily, and Riley helped Merlyn keep the squirrel population down in the neighborhood. Merlyn never met a stranger, and he was always ready to help family and friends.
Merlyn was preceded in death by: parents and an infant brother, James Andersen.
Survivors are: wife, Bonita Andersen of 50 years; son, Kris Andersen of Rapid City, S.D.; daughters, Cosette Greer and her husband, Gary, of Dallas and Corrinne Andersen and special friend Scott Singleton of Lincoln, Neb.; brother, Russell Andersen and his wife, Judy, of Lincoln; sisters, Erlene Davis and her husband, Stan, and Vickie Brandt and her husband, Tom, all of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Sandra Eggers and her husband, Roger, of Ruskin; grandchildren, Haley Greer and Caley Greer, both of Kearney, Neb., and Andrew Greer and fiancée Janee Nienhouser of Lincoln; and nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin, NE.
