Bernardino was the son of Jose Abel Anaya and Francisca Narvaiz. Identified siblings were Antonio, Faustin, Felix, Maria, and Abel.

On 23 Feb 1942, Bernardino N. Anaya (B: 1914, New Mexico) enlisted as a Private in the US Army at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was described as a resident of Santa Fe and 5 feet 10 inches. Bernardino served in the 32 Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the 32nd was moved into defensive positions along the West Coast. The troops began intensive training as a motorized unit at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Training maneuvers were held in the Mojave Desert to prepare the 32nd to defeat the German Afrika Korps, led by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. A change in Allied strategy, however, turned the 32nd overnight toward its role in amphibious assaults to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. In Sep 1942, the Japanese invaded and occupied Attu Island. On 11 May 1943, the operation to recapture Attu began. The 32nd regiment played a major role in retaking American territory. The Japanese did not appose the American landings. Instead, they dug in on the high ground. Severe cold sickened the men and vehicles would not run, and Japanese booby traps slowed American progress in retaking the island. But, the Japanese were eventually defeated. Bernardino's unit, date of passing, and Purple Heart award; indicate he lost his life at Attu.
