Cornelius Washington, son of Henry K.and Magdalena Kapp Amsler, was born on his father's farm near Fryburg, on July 3, 1849.
At the age of 21, he was engaged in the oil business in Triumps and Garfield, Pa., for fifteen years. He then moved on, in April of 1884, to Marienville where he became a mercantile owner, having purchased the interest of I. W. Kahle in a general store. Mr. Amsler conducted business at the store for 22 years. He had various interests, one of which was lumbering.
He was first married, on August 24, 1870, to Laura Sigworth,daughter of John H. and Frances Sigworth. She died July 3, 1893. The couple adopted a son, Lee H. Amsler, in 1879. Lee was married to Emily Carrier.
He then married Ida A. Moore, daughter of H. C. and Elizabeth Black Moore, on April 17, 1895. The couple hd a son, Henry Moore, born March 20, 1896.
In 1905 Mr. Amsler moved to Clarion and erected a home at 707 Main Street.
