He enlisted Jan. 14, 1864, and was discharged Nov 19, 1865. He was wounded on Oct. 25, 1864, at the Battle of Marais de Cygnes (also known as Mine Creek) along the Kansas-Missouri border south of Kansas City.

Francis M. Ammon was born in 1838 in Rush Co., Indiana, the son of Zachariah & Mary Ammon. He enlisted as a Private on January 14, 1864 at the age of 26. Joining Co. I, 4th Iowa Cavalry Regiment. Mustered out on May 19, 1865 at Davenport, IA.
