De Hart H. Ames was born on the old home farm in Great Valley, N. Y., January 30, 1872. He came to Franklinville to school, and graduated from Ten Broeck Academy in the class of 1892. The remainder of that year was spent as clerk in the Graves, Holmes & Smith Grocery.

Mr. Ames went to Little Valley, the county seat, January 1, 1893, as special deputy clerk in the County Clerk's office, and continued there in the same capacity for eight years. From January 1, 1901, to December 31, 1906, he was under-sheriff, then became Sheriff of Cattaraugus County for the years 1907, 1908 and 1909. In 1910 he was again under-sheriff until he resigned to go to Oklahoma to look after his oil interests there.

On his return he became manager for the Ames Lumber Company, and closed out their business at Canaseraga, N. Y. In February 1911 he came to Franklinville and bought an interest with his brother Guy in the real estate, farm, loans, and insurance business, which has since been conducted by them under the firm name of D. H. Ames & Co. The insurance part of the business was sold to R. L. Farnham January 1, 1914.

Mr. Ames is the Republican nominee for member of Assembly from this district.
