MATINICUS - Charles Austin "Papa" Ames, 68, died at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport.
Born in Rockland, he was a lifelong resident of Matinicus. Educated in local schools he was a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Ames worked all his life as a fisherman out of Matinicus, retiring in 2001.
An accomplished woodcarver, he carved both boats and ducks.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching wrestling, hunting and Halibut trawling.
Pre-deceased by one brother Keith Ames in 1976, Mr. Ames is survived by two sons' and their wives, Mark K. and Lori Ames, David A. and Darlene Ames all of Matinicus; one daughter and her husband, Barbara J. and Roger Kelley of Lehigh, FL; two brothers, William McNeil of Rockland, Kenneth Ames and his wife Maude of Matinicus; five grandchildren, Shannon Ames, Heather Ames, David Ames the II, Joshua Ames, Sara Murray and her husband David; one great-grandchild, Owen Murray as well as several nieces and nephews.
Interment at Matinicus Cemetery.
Reverend Ted Hoskins officiated.
