Etta F. "Auntie Etta" Ames, 85, died Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead, where she had resided since last March. Born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, January 9, 1918, she was the daughter of Herbert D. and Bessie Fessenden Ames. Having moved to Vinalhaven at the age of five, she was educated in local schools and was a 1936 graduate of Vinalhaven High School.
Shortly after graduating, she moved to Massachusetts, residing in the Attleboro area. For a brief period she worked at McLean Hospital in Belmont. For more than 35 years she worked witht Texas Instruments in Attleboro, retiring in 1983 from her position as an Enviromental Test Technician.
Returning to Vinalhaven following her retirement, Miss Ames has been an active member of the Union Church. While living in Massachusetts, she was a member of the Baptist Church where she enjoyed participation in the Missionary Society and supported other missionary endeavors for more than 50 years..
She has enjoyed a special relationship with her 2nd cousin David L. Readen and his children, Elena and Tyler, who refererd to Miss Ames as Auntie Etta.
Miss Ames is survived by two cousins, June F. MacDonald of Vinalhaven, Hattie Alix of Whitinsville, Massachusetts; as well as several other second cousins.
A graveside service will be held at Browns Head Cemetery, Vinalhaven. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
