Baptized John Henry Stetson Ames, he was known by almost everyone as "Harry." He was the son of Philander Ames (1803, Dedham, MA) and Rebecca Gills (1808, Charleston, MA). He was living with his parents at Waltham, Middlesex County, in 1850 (1850 US Census). Harry soon left for California. After the outbreak of the Civil War, Harry enlisted as a saddler at San Francisco September 20, 1861, and was mustered into Company E, 2nd California Cavalry. He was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco October 6, 1864 (Orton, 235). After the war he returned to Massachusetts, where he was living with his parents at Stoneham, Middlesex County, in 1870 (1870 US Census). Harry gave his occupation as "mariner." Harry married Abbey Frances Sprague* at Stoneham December 25, 1874. He appears as a widower living with his infant son Charles at Stoneham in the 1880 U.S. Census. Harry filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Massachusetts March 18, 1891, and received application No. 1,023,739 and certificate No. 703,773. Harry refiled for his veteran's pension February 26, 1907. He appears as a resident at Wellfleet with his son Charles in the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census. According to his Massachusetts death certificate, Harry died at Wellfleet and was buried in Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, February 19, 1914.
