Death: Jul. 29, 1940

Mrs. Mary Ament Passes Away Monday. Mary Catherine, daughter of Nathan and Matilda Anna
Davidson, was born at Wilmington, Delaware, October 30, 1855. When but a small child she came with
her parents to Illinois where they established a home near Marceline. Here she grew to womanhood and
on September 3, 1873, she was united in marriage to Marshall David Ament at Carthage, Illinois. To
this union twelve children, eight sons and four daughters were born. Mr. and Mrs. Ament lived for a
number of years in Illinois, and for a short period of time in Kansas and Missouri, coming to Iowa in
1912.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died February 10, 1929, a sister, and the following
children: Martha Ellen Powell, Anna Maud Sovern, Julia Thirtyacre, Joseph, Clyde, Clarence and
Marshall David Jr. Ament. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Maggie Durfee of Minden, South Dakota;
and the following children: John Charles of West Liberty; William of Peoria, Illinois, Everett Sherman,
Raymond and Mrs. Minnie Ruble of Wapello; also 42 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and
many relatives and friends.
Some time ago she was stricken with a heart attack, with the result that a blood clot formed in her left
limb. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in Burlington on Thursday of last week, where the limb was
amputated on the following Saturday in the hope of arresting the malady but it was of no avail, and she
passed away, Monday, July 29, at 3:30 p.m., having attained the aged of 84 years, 8 months and 29
days.
Thus comes to a close, a long useful and beautiful life. "Grandma Ament" as she spoken of by her many
friends, will be sadly missed not only in her family, but by her wide circle of friends, who admired her
for her genial disposition, her activity and helpfulness and who loved her for her sweet, gentle, and
consistent Christian life. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was a regular
attendant at services when her health permitted.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, Thursday, August 1, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by
the Rev. R. C. Druse. Interment was made in Wapello Cemetary. Bearers were her grandsons.
