Eleanor Dorrit Green Ambrose, 90 of Eaton, died on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Life Care Center of Greeley.
She was born November 6, 1919 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Joseph Wood Green and Mattie H. Dunnington Green, the fourth of six children. She was raised in the Colorado Springs area.
She graduated high school in Ellicott. Upon graduation, she followed her two older brothers to Colorado A & M, now CSU, in Fort Collins, majoring in Home Economics and Education. She took one year off from college to teach in Lincoln County to finance her remaining college education. Upon returning to college she was introduced to the love of her life, Fred Woodrow Ambrose, a dairyman from Galeton, Colorado. She graduated from Colorado A & M in 1943. She and Fred were married on January 9, 1944 at the home of her sister in Colorado Springs. They returned to farm near Galeton continuing to operate the dairy with Fred's brother Ernest until 1955. Eleanor worked along side the men in the harvesting of the crops. They continued to farm until selling the property in 1964 at which time the family moved to Eaton. She taught 1 year in Gill and finished her teaching career in 1985 at Galeton Elementary after 24 years. She was a member of the Galeton Community Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Bible School Teacher, church board member, member of the Ladies Aide and a deacon. Eleanor loved working with children which could be seen in her involvement in many other organizations including the Girl Scouts. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling with her brothers and sisters through the United States, Canada, and the Carribean.
Family was very important to Eleanor, her door and heart were always open, embracing many of her grandchildren's friends and becoming "Oma" to them as well. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Sue of Eaton who was her primary caregiver for the last 5 years of her life; a son, James Fred and his wife Karen Lynn of rural Gill; a brother, Dr. Joseph Green of Boulder. Four granddaughters and their husbands, Tammie and Jeff Raef of Amarillo, Texas, Jodie and Johnny Tuxhorn of Loveland, Barbara and Mike Lening of Pueblo West, and Megan Ambrose of Reno, Nevada and 10 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and life long friends Harold and Lucille Herbest of Eaton. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 brothers Ed, Walt, and Teddy Green, and sister Frances Stanko.
