While serving with the Co B, 10th Inf. Reg. of Massachusetts Lewis was wounded at Fair Oaks, Virginia in 1862 and then discharged.
Reenlisted with the Co L, 1st Cavalry Ref. of Massachusetts and was again wounded, at Todd's Tavern, Virginia in 1864.
Taken as a POW at Boydton Plank Road, Virginia on October 27, 1864.
Exchanged on February 20, 1865.
