On 9 February 1968, Staff Sergeant Donald Dean Alvis was serving with C Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

In a battle that day, SSG Alvis was killed in action when he was struck by small arms fire.
