Mrs. Bryant Allam – Published 5 Sept. 1951
Laura Alton eldest daughter of Francis M. and Julia Alton was born in Marion County, Iowa on July 7, 1867 and departed from this life on August 29, 1951 at the age of 84 years, one month and 22 days.
With the family she came to Kansas as a young girl in the fall of 1881, where they settled on a farm northeast of Little River. From that time, except for a short sojourn into Nebraska, she had lived her entire life in Kansas in the vicinity of Little River.
On September 12, 1889, Laura was married to Bryant C. Allam. To them was born one son, Edgar. Aunt Laura and Uncle Bryant, as they were known to everyone in Little River, celebrated their Golden Wedding appropriately at their son's home in Little River on Sept. 1939; and then their 60th wedding anniversary three years ago at a gathering of relatives and friends. Uncle Bryant preceded her in death last December 24th 1950.
She was a loving wife and mother and a good neighbor. As long as health permitted she enjoyed nothing more than to gather her friends and loved ones about her in her home. After the death of her sister, Carrie Moss, in 1906, she and Uncle Bryant opened their hearts and their home to the Moss children, who grew to man and womanhood under their care and guidance.
She was a member of the Christian Church, and took an active interest in the community and its affairs as long as her health would permit. Although in failing health these last years, she never complained and her whole interest and thought was of others. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Allam of Little River, three grandchildren and one great grandchild, two brothers, Geo. W. Alton and A.M. Alton both of Little River, four sisters, Mrs. Frank Gray, Geneseo, Mrs. Martha Dawson, Ford, Kansas, Mrs. Hugh Scott, Anselmo, Nebraska and Mrs. Charles Mills, Osborne, Kansas, nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon August 31, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. H. W. Cox and Percy L. Perry shared in the service. Burial was made in Bean cemetery.
