Winter Haven – Albert ‘Red' Altman, 91, of Winter Haven died of heart failure at Good Shepherd Hospice House on Saturday, November 4, 2006.
Born in Jacksonville, Red moved to Winter Haven in 1951. He graduated from St. Paul's High School and attended the University of Florida.
He was a flight instructor at Peter O. Knight airport in Tampa prior to entering the Army Air Force in 1942. He served in England with the Ninth Air Force as a member of its Air Transport Group. During this service he was assigned as pilot for the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band.
Red later operated flying schools at Stengle Field in Gainesville and in Green Cove Springs and moved to Winter Haven when Bartow Air Base became a flight school for the Air Force. He retired as a Lt. Col. From the USAF Reserves. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and was active at Egypt Temple in Tampa, working on the Shrine Hospital Committee. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Altman is survived by daughter, Cynthia Threlkeld, son-in-law, Dr. Cliff Threlkeld, granddaughter, Dr. Tamara Pistoria, all of Winter Haven; grandson , Jeremy Threlkeld, Bradenton; granddaughter, Mary-Susan Threlkeld, Tallahassee; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Beymer Memorial United Methodist church in Winter Haven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd hospice, 105 Arneson Avenue, Auburndale, Florida, 33823.
