Louie R. Calhoun Altfillisch of Canton, Mass., died Monday, July 10, 2006, at a Massachusetts hospital after a brief illness. She was 78. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Louie followed her family's construction business in West Texas until the age of 13. Her family moved to Fort Worth in 1940. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School and then from Hockaday Junior College in Dallas. She was admitted to the University of Texas at Austin in 1944. She was accepted as one of two female engineering majors out of 5,000 applicants. Louie met Michael D. Altfillisch at the University of Texas. They married in 1947. They moved to Canton in 1953. She was active in First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. She was a past president of the Woman's Alliance Circle and the PM Club, a member of the Ponkapoag Civic Association, a founding member of the Canton PTA, a member of the Scholar Dollar Foundation, past president of the Canton Community Club and member of the Presidents Club of Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs. She was an active member of the University of Texas Alumnae Club and the Wine and Food Society of Boston. She was also past president of the Canton League of Women Voters. Mrs. Altfillisch worked as a comptroller and assistant treasurer of her husband's firm, Electro Syn Corp. in Canton, for over 27 years. She was the loving daughter of the late Mamie Miles and the late Herbert Calhoun; beloved wife of the late Michael D. Altfillisch; and loving mother of the late James Calhoun and the late Michael Calhoun. Survivors: She was the loving mother of Alice A. Earle of Canton, Michael D. Altfillisch Jr. of North Carolina and Miles D. Altfillisch of Ohio; loving sister of Dora Moffit of Texas; and proud grandmother of Caroline, Daniel, David, Michael and Norman Earle and Elizabeth and Andrew Altfillisch.
