Hubert “Hups” S. Altenburger
Hubert “Hups” S. Altenburger, 88, died at 10 a.m. March 25, 2006, at Van Crest Health Care, Delphos.
He was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Ottoville to Andrew A. and Matilda Schmitt Altenburger, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 16, 1946, he married Dorothy Schlagbaum Altenburger, who survives in Ottoville.
Mr. Altenburger served on Ottoville Village Council, was an active golfer, loved to play cards and work with wood. He was an avid Big Green fan. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, Holy Name Society, YMCA Van Wert, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740. He is a graduate of Ottoville High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a master sergeant.
Survivors also include three sons, Jack (Barb) Altenburger of Toledo, Randy (Judy) Altenburger of Ottoville and Dennis (Debra) Altenburger of Delphos; three sisters, Louise “Sis” Alt of Ottoville, Dolores “Dolly” Friemoth of Fort Jennings and Irene (William) Stechschulte of Kalida; four brothers, Jerome “Whitey” (Velma) Altenburger, Wilbur “Bill” (Sally) Altenburger Sr., Paul “Ducker” (Betty) Altenburger and Donald “Tiner” (Bettie) Altenburger, all of Ottoville; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Alt of Van Wert; eight grandchildren, Brian Altenburger, Julie Kolly, Jill Wenzlick, Renee Burgei, Beth Altenburger, Jason Altenburger, Jena Altenburger and Jonathon Altenburger; and four great*grandchildren, Emma Wenzlick, Andrew Kolly, Hannah Wenzlick and Marissa Kolly.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold “Tack” Altenburger and Peter Schmitt.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. John Stites will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Ottoville, where the VFW will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Harter and Schier Memorial Chapel, where the VFW will have a military service at 7 p.m. and a parish wake will be held at 8:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
