Death: Nov. 29, 2012, USA

A homegoing service for Mr. Charles Alston, Sr. will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 1:00 p.m. at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Charles Alston, Sr. was born July 16, 1943 in Blythewood, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Noah Alston, Sr. and the late Nellie Alston. He quietly departed this life on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at his home in Hopkins, South Carolina.

He was educated in the public schools of Richland County, graduating from C.A. Johnson High School. He was employed at Southern Wine and Spirits, where he worked as a truck driver for many years, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Affectionately known as "Charlie Boy", Charles was a loving, sensitive and compassionate person. We are in sorrow because we will miss his kind smile; his helpful ways; and his encouraging spirit. But we are so grateful for the goodness and joy and the laughter and kindness he brought to all of us. We will forever treasure the beauty of his life and the way he shared it with others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers: Henry, Noah Jr., Fred, Damon, Nathaniel ("Bobby"), Thomas, James and Willie ("Billy"); and one sister, Clementine.

His loving memory will be cherished by his wife, Geraldine Green Alston of Hopkins, South Carolina; seven children: Phyllis L. MacPherson, Charles Alston, Jr., Evelyn Alston Hemingway, Anita "LaVerne" (Isaac "Terry") Heyward, Ethel "LeeLee" Alston, all of Columbia, South Carolina, LaTasha (Herman) Suber-Johnson, of Hopkins, South Carolina and Tara Talbert of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four stepsons, Oswald Green, Thomas D. (LaTarsa) Williams, Jr., both of Columbia, South Carolina, Ronald (Debra) Cunningham of Petersburg, Virginia and Demetria Cunningham of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and one sister, Betty A. (Lincoln C. III) Jenkins of Columbia, South Carolina. He also leave fourteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
