"Mirroring the Mickey Spillane Waterfront 17 Highway through Murrells Inlet is the Reverend Luther Alston Memorial Highway.
U.S. Highway 17 Bypass through Murrells Inlet, from Highway 707 to where it intersects with 17 Business, is named after the "patriarch of the Murrells Inlet community," according to State House records.
The highway was named after him in 1998 because of his efforts to organize the community and the care he took to create and maintain the south entrance to Murrells Inlet.
Alston was also a pastor at several area churches, including Eaddy's Tabernacle which he founded, according to State House records.
It was former S.C. Rep. Vida Miller who sponsored the legislation to get the road named after Alston." - The Sun News September 2011
