CLAY CENTER-- Keith E. Alquist, 88, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

Mr. Alquist was born May 12, 1924 in Clay County, the son of Emery and Kate Elizabeth (Lyne) Alquist.

He grew up in Clay County and graduated from CCCHS in 1942. He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II. He attended Kansas State University following the war. He farmed north of Morganville until 1956. He then worked for Northern Natural Gas Company in Baker City, Ore. and Sumas, Wash. He also owned and operated Hometown Hardware in Ferndale, Wash. He returned to Clay Center in 1964. He married Ruth Hickok on May 28, 1969. They farmed northeast of Clay Center. His wife preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 2004. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, BPOE, Masonic Lodge, ISIS Shrine and Lions Club, he served on the Clay County Hospital Board and was on the Farmers Union Cooperative Assn. Board. He also helped to build the Milford Lake Dam and the football stadium at Kansas State University. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Phillip and Bobby Alquist; one sister, Lillian Gilbert; one brother, Wayne Alquist; and one grandson, David Newsome.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie Newsome of Sedro Woolley, Wash., Patricia Halstead of Clay Center and Christine Sauder and husband Brady of Manhattan; four sons, Keith Alquist II and wife Julie of Brighton, Colo., Jim and wife Laura Smith of Topeka, Bill and wife Janet Smith of Salina and Eric Alquist and wife Michelle of Clay Center.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the United Methodist Church, Clay Center, with the Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday with the family greeting friends from 4 to 6 at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.
