Birth: Jan. 16, 1817
Greene County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Mar. 5, 1889
Greene County
Pennsylvania, USA

Census records indicate Jonathan was one of at least five children born to John Allum (1784-1836) and Sarah (Raper) Allum (later Wallace) (1780-1869). Because nothing beyond gender is known about three of them, each born when a federal census documented only the head of a household and number of males and females within, only Jonathan and his elder sibling James are referred to.

Born in 1817, married at age 20 in 1837 to Ellisabeth Supler (6 years his elder), he became the father of nine children. One died in infancy, another in childhood. Of the seven children who lived to adulthood, four migrated west from Pennsylvania: John Supler Allum to Iowa; Sarah Phylena (Allum) Gregory to Illinois, then Kansas; Andrew Kimmins Allum to Iowa, then Missouri, then Oklahoma; and Rachel Anna Allum (later Fugard) to Iowa, a brief sojourn in Kansas, then back to Iowa. The others remained in Pennsylvania: Sophia Jane (Allum) Carroll, Lydia Margaret (Allum) Huffman; and Leroy Hudson Allum.

A farmer throughout his adult life, news of Jonathan's death on March 5, 1889 in Pennsylvania reached Iowa in time to appear in the March 15 KELLOGG ENTERPRISE, Kellogg, Jasper County. It read as follows:

"Mr. J. S. Allum and sister, Mrs. Ira Fugard, received the sad intelligence, last Saturday, of the death of their father, Jonathan Allum, of Harveys, Pennsylvania, who died suddenly of spinal fever, on Tuesday morning, March 5th, 1889, at the ripe age of 72 years. Deceased leaves a widow and 7 children, three of whom are residents of this county, viz: J. S. Allum, and Mrs. Ira Fugard, of Buena Vista Township, and Mr. A. K. Allum, of Monroe; one is located in Kansas and three in Penn. The bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of all in their afflication."
