ERNEST REGINALD ALLSBROOK, age 93 died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Springmoor in Raleigh.
Born February 20, 1913, in Scotland Neck, NC, he was the son of the late Ernest Franklin and Eron Pope Allsbrook. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Wilson and Henry Wilton Allsbrook; granddaughter, Rita Allsbrook Riley; daughter-in- law, Deborah Allsbrook; and son-in- law, Floyd Brock.
He was educated at NC State University and the University of Georgia. He was an official with Colonial Stores for 34 years, then owned and operated a chain of Convenient Food Mart Stores in NC until retirement in 1978. During the next ten years, he and his wife, Ellen Madry Allsbrook, enjoyed traveling and dividing their time between Nokomis, FL and Raleigh.
For many years, he was a faithful and active member of Fairmont United Methodist Church and taught in the Men's Wesley Bible Class. He was also a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge #40, Scottish Rite, 32 Mason, and a charter member of Amran Shrine Temple.
Among his favorite organizations was the Optimist Club of Raleigh where he was an Honorary Life Member, having been a member since 1953, and served as President and District Lieutenant Governor. He was also honored as a Life Member of Optimist International.
He served as a past president of the Raleigh Civic Council, taught Red Cross lessons, Dale Carnegie courses, and taught and called square dancing. His favorite hobbies were boating, water-skiing, fishing, and woodworking. He enjoyed a full life and the love and joy he gave to others was a gift to the world.
Survivors in addition to his wife of 72 years are two sons, Ernest Reginald, Jr. and wife, Margo of Smithfield and Robert Douglas of Wilmington; a daughter, Donna Allsbrook Broadwell and husband, Ed of Asheville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandson. He is also survived by one brother, Mial Gilbert Allsbrook of Laughlin, NV; and two sisters, Muriel Knight of Roanoke Rapids and Emily Spruce of Tampa, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fairmont United Methodist Church, Raleigh, with the Rev. Steve Hickle and Rev. Phyllis Mayo officiating. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
