COLUMBIA Lucile Cheek Allsbrook, born January 4th, 1926, daughter of the late Charles and Belle Taylor Cheek of Columbia, died Thursday, December 3rd, 2009, in Palmetto Health Baptist, Hospice Care. She was the wife of George Sydney Allsbrook, Sr., who passed away on Christmas day, 1996.

"Lucy", as she was known by her co-workers, went to work at Fort Jackson the day after she graduated from Columbia High School at the age of 17. She worked in the base communications office, writing the Fort Jackson Telephone Book, before the days of computers. She was a natural at communication, with a God-given gift for the use of the telephone. Starting work during WWII and retiring at the age of 47, she dedicated 30 years of service to our country. In her younger days, she talked about her love of "jitterbug dancing" at the USO. She was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was always described by all she met as "so sweet" and having a pretty smile. She was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. Her kind and sweet spirit will forever live in the hearts of the family she leaves behind.

Lucile Cheek Allsbrook is survived by her daughter, Patricia Zimmer, and son, G. Syd Allsbrook, Jr. (Sherri); grandchildren, Stacey Black (Kris), Ryan Stokes, Angela Allsbrook and Sydney Allsbrook; great-grandchildren, Mya Black and Jaxin Black; and many nieces and nephews. she was predeceased by her husband, George S. Allsbrook, Sr.; brother, Charles Cheek; sisters, Inez Pittmon, Sarah Arledge, and Aubrey Fore.

Special thanks to Dr. Ruben Mayer, Palmetto Health Hospice, and to the staff of Lifecare Center of Columbia, Hall 400. Memorials can be made to Palmetto Health Hospice.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Allsbrook will be held Monday, December 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Travis Biller and Rev. Jon Weigel officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 Sunday evening at Greenlawn Funeral Home.
