Mother: Youtha Maudia LOWDERMILK b: 24 Sep 1867 in NC
Marriage 1 Mary Jetta DUGGINS b: 19 Nov 1908
Mr. Clay Allred was born September 18, 1902 in this community. When he was old enough he went to work in the Worthville Cotton Mill. Later on he met Mary Duggins and they were married July 3, 1934. Born unto them was one son, Eddie Clay who lives in this community.
Over the years Clay helped build what is known as Cox Dam on the Deep River. He worked for Jordan Spinning for over 30 years. One of his past times was hunting fox and trading dogs.
There is one thing that he loved so much and that is music. He studied music under the leadership of the Stamps Baxter Music Co., and he has taught music school. Many of his memories will carry him back to quartets and groups he has sung with over the years. He sang with the Old Carolina Quartet, the Deep River Quartet, Deep River Duet, and other local groups. Many of us today remember when he sang with the Deep River Duet for 15 years over WGWR.
He has taught Sunday school for many years, been choir leader, Sunday school superintendent, and he now teaches the adult men Sunday school class. He also sings in the choir, and when we can talk him into it will sing a solo for our service. One of his favorite passages of scripture is Psalms 23 where it speaks of the Lord as my shepherd. Truly this has been so in his life.
Franklinville - Edward Clay Allred, 87, of Route 1, died Sunday night, Mar. 4, 1990, at Randolph Hospital Inc.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at White's Memorial Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Gerald Conn and the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Randolph County, a retired employee of Jordan Spinning in Cedar Falls and a retired farmer. He is the originator and member of the Deep River Quartet and was active in the senior citizens group of White's Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Eddie Clay and Carolyn Allred of Rt. 1, Franklinville; one grandchild.
