Entering the Navy's V-5 Aviation Cadet Program in 1943 at age 18, he earned aviator's wings and an ensign's commission. He piloted F6F and F4U fighters in the Pacific Theater.
Lieutenant (j.g.) Allison was severely burned in an explosion and fire while landing an F4U Corsair on a carrier in 1945. He spent six months in hospitals, during which time the war ended.
Discharged in 1946, he re-entered the Navy in 1949 as an enlisted man. In the Korean War he served as a helicopter crew chief on a carrier. He survived a second brush with death when his helicopter crashed into the Sea of Japan in 1955. He retired as a chief petty officer in 1965.
Dean Hollis Allison was born on July 28, 1924, in Alberta, Canada, the youngest of three sons born there to American parents. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Claire; three nieces; and his widow's three children from a former marriage.
