Mrs. Thankful Allis

A fitting last tribute was the service held here last Saturday for Mrs. Thankful Hannah Allis, when her remains were committed to rest in the Masonic cemetery beside those of her husband the late Prof. H. M. Allis. Mrs. Allis died in San Antonio on January 1, at the home of her adopted daughter, Mrs. M. C. Askey, 316 San Pedro Avenue.
Her remains were brought back to Gonzales for burial beside those of her husband. Mrs. Allis was born in Monroe, La., in 1842, but moved to Gonzales while a young girl. Here she gained her education and graduated from the old Gonzales College in 1862.
In 1866 she married Prof. H. M. Allis and eight years later the couple founded the Old Multon Institute, one of the leading schools in Texas at the time. Mrs. Allis continued to operate the school for three years after her husband's death in 1892 and then moved to San Antonio. She taught in the Peacock School here for 15 years, Mrs. Allis later lived in Nueces county and until recently lived at the home of Mrs. E. W. Walker, another adopted daughter in Blanco county, who died on Dec. 26.
Mrs. Allis was widely beloved, cutlured and refined, a representative of the Old South in all its traditions. A number of her students in the Old Moulton Institute reside in Gonzales today, and recall beautiful and fine memories of the pioneer teacher. Many of those whom she guided in learning at the old institute went forth in the world and made good in many ways, reflecting credit on the school and its teachers.
Mantling her last resting place here were many beautiful flowers, coming from friends and loved ones of Mrs. Allis, whose fine character has been a shining light to them throughout their lives.
