Gospel preacher, Christian college faculty member, and college president. Alley preached in five states, was chair of the department of Bible at York College, and was president of Crowley's Ridge College. The college's current president, Ken Hoppe, credits Alley for keeping the school alive in the early 1980s. Alley is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bettye; four children; 14 grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister.

Dr. Joe K. Alley, 78, of Searcy, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, after an extended illness. He and his wife, Bettye Woodroof Alley, had only recently moved here from Shelbyville, Tenn., and had just last month celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. He was a retired clergyman and educator, and a member of the College Church of Christ. Dr. Alley was born Feb. 12, 1926, the son of Eleve and Bessie Brian Alley, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He began preaching the gospel during his teen years, and received formal training at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Mississippi State University at Starkville, and Augustana Seminary of Davenport, Iowa. During a distinguished 60-year career he held pulpits at Spring City, Gainsboro, Shelbyville, and Lewisburg, Tenn.; Booneville and Starkville, Miss.; Davenport, Iowa; and Topeka and Garden City, Kan. In 1963 Alley was called to head the Bible Department of York College at York, Neb., a post he held for ten years, followed by a three-year term as vice president. In 1976 he became president of Crowley's Ridge College at Paragould, Ark., where he served for three years before returning to full-time gospel ministry. Graveside services were held Saturday, Nov. 20, in Shelbyville, Tenn.
