Anchorage resident Helen Lovelle Allen , 94, died of natural causes Sept. 7, 2005, at home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., with Chaplain Don McCullough offciating. Inurnment will be at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was born Dec. 27, 1910, in Frederick, Kan., to Sam and Viola Floyd. She graduated from high school in Oklahoma and attended college in Long Beach, Calif. While living in California, she had worked at Hirmes Market, and after moving to Anchorage in 1960, at the Gambell Carrs from 1960 to 1975. Mrs. Allen enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Elks Lodge and Pioneers of Alaska. Her family wrote: " Helen Allen was a woman of drive, determination and resource. She sold Avon products to help make ends meet during the Depression. She settled in California with her first husband. After his passing she moved to Anchorage where her son, Robert, was stationed with the Air Force. Here she met and married her second husband. Her quick wit and sense of humor often kept friends and family on their toes, and her smile could brighten any room she was in. She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched."
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and JoAnn Slaughter; grandchildren, Donald, Cynthia, Mark, Mike, Todd and Tara; great-grandchildren, Angel, Chad, Matt, Michael, Nicole, Trevor and Dawson; great-great-grandchildren, Chase, Desiree, Caleb, Damon and Erika; stepson, Jerry Allen ; and stepdaughter, Mary Lou Story. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert D. Slaughter; second husband, Jerry Allen ; grandson, Robert H. Slaughter; and sister, Amarillo Fern Chapplier. Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.
