Richard H. Allen, 77, of 54 High St., retired quality control manager at Zero Manufacturing Co. in Monson, died Thursday in Farren Memorial Hospital, Montague City.

He previously operated the former Springfield Machine Co. with his father and later founded the Allen Lawnmower Co., which he operated until the 1940s.

He retired in 1974.

Born in Springfield, he had lived in Wilbraham most of his life and in Westfield before moving to Greenfield this year.

He attended Technical High School in Springfield.

He was a member of Wilbraham United Church and Wyben Union Church of Westfield.

He was also a member and former secretary of the Springfield Rotary Club and a past president of the Monson Rotary Club.

He leaves his wife, the former Margaret Oliver; two daughters, Shirley McDonnell of Noank, Conn., and Barbara Bongiovanni of Deerfield; a sister, Madeleine Twist of Sun City, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service July 23 in Wilbraham United Church with burial in Woodland Dell Cemetery, Wilbraham.

Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home, Springfield, is in charge.
