Born in Darwin, IL, he came to Purdue in 1909 as a member of the Animal Science Department. He became interested in photography and was named to head a newly-created photographic department in publications throughout the United States and in many foreign countries.
In 1963, Mr. Allen received the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association Certificate of Distinction Award. He was an elder in the Central Presbyterian Church, past president of the board of trustees, and past president of the Men's Association.
In 1904 he was married at Clay City, to Mary Abbie Peavey, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Martha (Mrs. John F.) Benham of Elkhart; one son, Chester P. Allen of West Lafayette; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Service July 24 at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, the Rev. H. Kenneth McCullen officiating; internment Grand View Cemetery, West Lafayette.
