BATTLE GROUND - Merle Joseph Allen, 54, died at 4:37 AM Sunday, Dec. 12, 1971, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks, following three years of ill-health. Born and reared at Detroit, MI, he moved to the Battle Ground area eight years ago.

Mr. Allen was last employed at Warren Paper Company for three years, retiring in 1959, due to ill health. Prior to that he worked as an orderly at the Indiana State Soldiers Home for two years. He served as Battle Ground marshall from 1663-1964. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in Europe. He was a prisoner of war for one year in Germany.

In 1968, he was married at Tazewell, TN, to Lucy England who survives. Also surviving are a son, Dennis Allen of Taylor, MI; four daughters, Mrs. Patricia Name of Lafayette, Lois Ann, Marcia, and Stacey Allen, all at home; his stepfather, Mike Allie of Dearborn, MI; and five grandchildren.
