Alice Elizabeth Holmes, daughter of John and Elizabeth Miller Holmes, was born in Orange County, Indiana, April 17, 1839, and passed from this life at ten p. m., August 31, 1920, at the home of her son, C. V. Allen, in North Henderson. On December 13, 1855, she was united in marriage to Elijah R. Allen in Orange County, Ind. They lived in Davis County near Washington, Ind., until October 1868, when they came to Mercer County, Illinois, where she has since made her home in and around North Henderson. To this union were born seven children, one an infant son John, preceded his mother in death, leaving to mourn her death, Mrs. Elizabeth Wray, of Fairfield, Ia., Mrs. Della Morford and Mrs. May Dunn of Dexter, Ia., Mrs. Grace Williams of Cottonwood, South Da., George and Clint of North Henderson, twenty-four grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Alexander Holmes, of Aticia, Ind., and many other relatives and friends. In early life she united with the Baptist church in Indiana and remained a member until in January 1887, with her husband she transferred her membership to the M. E. church of North Henderson, remaining in and living this faith till death. Since the death of her husband in 1913, she has made her home with her son, C. V. Allen. Mother Allen for many years was an active worker in the church, the Sunday school and the societies also for many years a steward of the church. Her life was given to serving others at home and among her friends and her Master never thing of self. Through her last illness of five week her sufferings were borne with a patience made possible by her faith in Christ.

The funeral was held at the M. E. church at North Henderson at 2:30 p. m. Thursday, Rev. E. R. Horton assisted by Rev. O. M. Dunlevy of Aledo conducted the services. The music was furnished by a quartet Mrs. L. J. Smith, Mrs. Frank Pitman, F. A. Mathers and E. B. Blackstone who sang, "O Come Angel Band," "We Are Going Down the Valley," "Homeward," and "With Christ As My Pilot," with Mrs. Aleck Miller at the piano. Interment at Mount Vernon cemetery.
