FRANCES JOY PERRY ALLEN
Frances Joy Perry Allen, daughter of Merrill and Pearl Harris Perry, was born Nov. 22, 1931 at Columbia, Iowa and passed away Sept. 8, 2012 at The Village in Indianola, Iowa.
She attended school in Williamson and Lucas and graduated from Chariton High School in 1950.
On Sept. 30, 1949 she was united in marriage to Edwin W. Allen. For the next 56 years they farmed the Allen Century Farm at Lucas, where they raised their children, Dan, Sue and Joyce.
In December 1996 they retired to the "townhouse" in Chariton. In September of 2010 they moved to Northridge Assisted Living. After 61 years of marriage, Edwin passed away Oct. 28, 2010. Frances moved to Circle of Life Hospice Legacy Lodge in Chariton. The Village in Indianola, Iowa became her home in September 2011.
Frances was acting postmaster at Lucas for 3 years and worked in the accounting and insurance department at Hy-Vee, Inc. for 15 years. She served on the Chariton Community School Board, the John L. Lewis Commission, Inc. and Lucas Betterment. In later years she volunteered at the John L. Lewis Mining and Labor Museum and enjoyed working in the Open Class Building during the Lucas County Fair.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lucas, serving as Elder and Treasurer of the Session, President of U.P.W. Sunday and Vacation Bible School teacher, Youth Leader, Pastor Nominating Committee, many other committees and always helped with the many chicken pot pie and roast beef suppers at the church.
In 1993 Frances collected the information which awarded her and Edwin the Farm Bureau Family Century Farm. On the farm she helped in many ways, standing proudly by Edwin as he received 1999's Lucas County Cattleman Hall of Fame and in 2004 when he received Lucas County Farm Bureau Farmer Hall of Fame.
On the farm she enjoyed raising chickens, a large garden and preserving the fruits of her labor. Many years after the Hereford bull was retired, she enjoyed reminding Edwin she claimed each "red" calf as hers to sell.
She always welcomed family and friends into her home with the invitation to share a meal. Frances could fill her table with delicious food on very little notice. She laughingly called her home "Grand Central Station."
She was a caregiver, a faithful, helpful and loving person to family and friends, always with a smile and a sense of humor. She especially enjoyed having her entire family sitting around her table for any occasion or no occasion. Just having everyone all together was her greatest joy.
Left to honor her memory are son Dan and wife Becky of Lucas, daughter Sue Frazier and husband Scott of Chariton and daughter Joyce Crissman of Wickenburg, Arizona; granddaughters Emily Peasley and husband Steve of Slater, Iowa, Katie Cooper and husband Doug of Mondamin, Iowa, Lindsay Crissman of Wikenburg, Arizona; grandsons Jared and Kohl Crissman of Wickenburg, Arizona; great-grandsons Kent and Justin Cooper, great-granddaughters Ellen, Brooke and Danielle Cooper; brother Linford Perry and wife Estalee of Springfield, Missouri, Gene Perry of Mason City, Iowa; sister-in-law Beulah Perry of Chariton and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin, sister Erma Foster and husband Bob, brother Russell Perry, sister-in-law Arlene Perry, two infant brothers and an infant sister.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery. Officiating were Reverands Linda and Dale O'Connell.
