GERALD "MOPE" ALLEN
Gerald "Mope" Allen, son of Earl and Janie (Halls) Allen, was born July 31, 1926, at home on the farm near Lucas, Iowa. He spent most of his life in and around Lucas.
Gerald graduated from Lucas High School in 1943. He worked for the railroad, the State Forestry Commission, Humeston Sale Barn, was a mail carrier and farmed. Mope was the type to help whenever someone needed help.
He served in the Korean War. He was a member of the Lucas First Responders for 40 years, a member of the VFW and a lifetime member of the D.A.V., Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Paul Revere Lodge in Lucas, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Fireman's Association, Chariton York Rites and the American Legion.
Mope had many interests. He loved to fish and was quite a gardener, raising tomatoes and a variety of vegetables. He played ball with the adult league and was a big fan of Little League, enjoying many games that his grandchildren played in. There were many stories told about his hobbies and his fun-loving way of teasing family and friends.
In 1955, he married Betsy Taylor and to this union one daughter was born, Beverly Ann Allen. They were later divorced.
On Jan. 31, 1987, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Helen Dovenspike. They had a very good and happy life together before he departed this life Sunday morning, Jan. 24, 1999, at home in Lucas, Iowa.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Helen Allen of the home in Lucas; their children, Beverly and husband Mose Bear of Russell, Kathy and husband Joe Egbert of Lucas, Julie and husband Doyle Masters of Derby, David Dovenspike and wife Nitza of Indianola, Becky and husband Art Goering of Chariton, and one adopted daughter, Irvin and husband Ed George of Des Moines, 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He is also survived by his brothers Willard and wife Elnora of Lucas and Marney and wife Margaret of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Kathryn and husband Charles Dixson of Lucas and Patricia Peterson of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Mae and husband Bob VanSteenis, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends that will miss his loving and joking way.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Mosher Funeral Home in Chariton. A longtime friend, the Rev. Hearold McElwee, officiated at the services. He spoke of what a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather Mope was and that his family came first and he was always there for them regardless of the need.
Margaret Coons and Julie Swarthout sang very special songs "Keeper of the Stars," "In Daddy's Hands." and "Grandpa, Tell Me About the Good Old Days." Pallbearers were Dan Allen, Bill Evans, Glen Babcock, Mike Patterson, Steve Peasley and Herbert Hamilton. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
