THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT
Thursday, October 4, 1962
Earl Lynn Allen, eldest son of W. E. and Anna Taylor Allen, was born at Lucas, Ia., Feb. 21, 1895, and passed away at the home farm, Sept. 27, 1962. He spent most of his life in Lucas county.
Earl was graduated from Lucas high school in 1913 and later attended Parsons College at Fairfield and Business College in Des Moines.
On May 29, 1918 he was married to Janie Halls of Lucas. They established their home on a farm north of Lucas, where they lived for 37 years, moving to Lucas in 1955.
Seven children were born in this home. Two daughters died in infancy. The surviving five include Marney of Portland, Ore.; Kathryn Dixson, Willard and Gerald of Lucas, and Patricia Peterson of Hampton.
Earl's adult years were spent in service to the public and his community.
He served several years as township assessor and was a member of the Triple A for 13 years. When he retired from this office in 1951, it marked the first time since the Triple A was organized that Earl had not had some part of it in Lucas county.
He was a member of the County Board of Education when it was first reorganized in 1948. At the time of his unexpected passing, he was serving his second term on the Board of Supervisors.
Those who have worked closest to Earl speak of him as a public spirited man, fair in his dealings with his fellowman and one who was willing to sacrifice his time, labor and talents for the good of his community.
Even though he led a busy public life, it never interfered with his love and devotion for his wife and family and the enjoyment of his grandchildren.
Earl was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Masonic Lodge of Lucas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ardis, a son-in-law, LaVere Peterson, a grandson, Joseph, and two infant daughters.
Survivors include his wife, Janie, five children, eleven grandchildren, three daughters-in-law: Margaret, Elnora and Betsy, and one son-in-law, Charles Dixson; a brother, Edwin, and two sisters, Aileen Penick of Woodburn and Mildred Towne of Jamaica.
Services were held at Miley Chapel, Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. Vester Chance officiating. Masonic graveside rites were held in the Chariton cemetery.
