Obituary, Evelyn Coffey Allen, New Era Progress, Amherst, VA, August 27, 2008

Evelyn Marie Coffey Allen, 89, formerly of 330 Burley Hollow Road, Amherst, died Aug. 22, at Fairmont Crossing, 173 Brockman Park Drive, Amherst. She was the wife of the late William Hunter Allen Sr. for more than 60 years.

Born March 28, 1919, in Salisbury, near Eagle Rock, she was the daughter of the late Bascom Walker and Cora Sprouse Coffey. Her younger days were spent raising her six children, preparing meals, sewing and tending to daily household chores. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and neighbor. She served in many different capacities with the women's group at Sardis United Methodist Church, where she was a member for more than 55 years.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her five daughters, Shelby Campbell and her husband, Lee Roy, Barbara Layne and her husband, Johnny, Lois Cash and her husband, Roy, Gay Stinnett and her husband, Harry, and Fay Mays and her husband, Elwood, all of Amherst County; one son, William Hunter Allen Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Salem; 17 grandchildren, Lee, Tony, Keith, Eric, Barry, Steven, Susan, Cindy, Stephania, H.B. III, Chris, Jason, Bryan, Craig, Karen, Hunter and Emily; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and special friends, Talmadge and Nina Fain and their family of Roanoke.

Funeral services were conducted Aug. 25, at Sardis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Bartee, pastor of the church. Interment will follow in Tudor Hall Cemetery in the Sardis community.

The family received friends Aug. 24 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of Gay and Harry Stinnett, 1886 Lexington Turnpike, Amherst.
