FAIRHOPE -- Annie Mae Allen, a former longtime teacher in the Baldwin County school system, died Sunday in a Fairhope hospital. Miss Allen, a native of Battles Wharf and a resident of Fairhope, taught in Baldwin schools for more than 30 years, serving at Baldwin County Training School in Daphne, Ellisville Elementary School in Loxley, Foley High School and Bay Minette Elementary School until retiring in 1987. While a teacher at Baldwin County Training Academy, she initiated the first homecoming parade. She was also a deputy voter registrar for the state of Alabama. A 1955 queen of the Colored Carnival Association, now the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, Miss Allen was affiliated with the Royal Sixteen Social Club and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. As a member of Twin Beech A.M.E. Zion Church, she sang in the senior choir for 55 years and served as president for 20 years. She was also a trustee board member, president of the culinary department for 20 years, a class leader, Program Calendar Committee chairwoman, and a chairperson of 100 Women in White. Survivors include a son, Ricky Allen of Battles Wharf; and a foster child, Wanda Suggs of Fairhope. The funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Twin Beech A.M.E. Zion Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home on St. Stephens Road in Prichard is handling arrangements.
