Birth: 1874
Death: Nov. 5, 1938

Believe Aged Victim Was Asleep: Alfred Allen, elderly citizen of Long Beach, was burned to death when his house was destroyed by fire last night and the charred torso was found early this morning among the drying embers of the fire that completely destroyed the building. A son Earl Allen who resided with his father was away from home on a fishing trip and when he returned home about 3 o'clock this morning the house had burned to the ground. The alarm was green and a search revealed that Mr. Allen had perished in the flames. Constable Chas. Foretich who summoned a jury for an inquest, said that the torso was found on the remains of the bed, indicating that the victim was asleep when the fire broke out. The jury empaneled by Coroner Jack Seymour shortly before daybreak this morning returned a verdict of accidental death from burning. Members of the jury were Leonard Dubuisson. D. H. Hodgens, R. McCaughan, Ed Hatten and A. Bosarge. The Allen home was located north of the L & N railroad in the northeastern section of Long Beach. Nothing to indicate how the fire originated was found, officials said. The only theory advanced being the possible explosion or overturning of a kerosene lamp. Mr. Allen said to be about 72 years of age, is survived by six sons and three daughters in addition to numerous other more distant relatives. His wife preceded him in death about a month ago. The surviving sons, all residents of the Coast section, are Hardy, Louis, Jesse, Owen, Jack and Earl. the daughters also Coast residents, are Mrs. F. L. Dubuisson, Mrs. Henry Barnes and Mrs. Terry Ladnier. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Allen Cemetery at Long Beach with Rev. P. S. Dodge, pastor of Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport officiating.
