The Gentle Man
(dedicated to Harold Levon Allen)

by D'ann Mathis

He stood towering above you
Yet his gentleness shined through.
Kind and soft-spoken
As he guided each of you.

He spent his time in a garden
With his wife from younger years.
"He helped to get the house just right",
She remembered through her tears.

As he aged his mind grew tired
Not many memories remained.
"Don't let them think that I forgot them"
He prayed to himself in pain.

"Let them know somehow, Dear Lord,
that this isn't really me."
"Please, let me show them one more time
just what they mean to me."

God told him "they remember, son,
They know just how you feel."
"The tears they shed are just because
they know your love is real."

The man slowly closed his eyes
And a soft smile wrinkled his cheek.
He was not hurting anymore;
His heart was now at peace.

As he towers from above them now
He looks down farther than e'er before.
He doesn't hurt, his mind is clear
For this he thanks the Lord:

"Thank you, Lord, for giving me
the best years of my life.
My home, my life, my family
And most of all, my wife"

"Comfort them, Lord as you did me
when I could no longer try.
My actions and my words were not
How I wanted to say ‘Good-bye'"

"Let them know that the flicker
they saw in my eye from time to time
was not just an empty thought;
for they were always on my mind."
