After attending schools in Syracuse and Cicero he attended Alfred University and Syracuse University. He entered the employ of the Norfolk & Western Railway Company in 1890 as an axeman on the engineering corps constructing the Ohio extension of that railway. He left to join the firm of Mather & Allen which acted as engineers in the Syracuse area for the construction of sewers and sidewalks, as well as brick and asphalt pavements. In 1898 he was made assistant general manager of the Syracuse Rapid Transit Railway Company and then various others. In June 1905 Alfred University conferred on him the honorary degree of Master of Science. On October 11, 1894 he married Florence R. Worster and they have a son, Alfred George.
