Waverly Journal, April 17, 1902

Elsie C. Ross, daughter of C. P. and Rachel A. Ross, was born near Palmyra, Macoupin county, Ill., March 4, 1877, and died at her home in this city Wednesday, April 16, 1902, being at the time of her death, 25 years, 1 month and 12 days old. On June 30, 1896, she was married to Charles F. Allen, who was at that time in business in Palmyra. To this union was born one son, Hugo Russel, August 18, 1897, who survives her to be cared for by his grandmother, Mrs. Wm. P. Allen. All the strength of a mother's love was given to little Hugo, who fully realizes the great loss he has to bear. She also leaves to mourn her death, a father, mother, brother and husband, and many other relatives and friends. Mrs. Allen is preceded in death by her mother, who was taken away with the same affliction August 5, 1884.
She was a graduate from the Palmyra High school in the class of '94, afterwards completing her education at Blackburn university in Carlinville. She taught her first school at the Maxfield school house in the spring of '95, and was one of the teachers in the Palmyra public schools in the fall and winter of 1895-96. She professed hope in Christ at the age of 15 years, at Barr, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Scottville, afterwards moving her membership to Plmyra, where she took an active part in all the religious services, being a Sunday School teacher for some time. She was given her letter when moving to this city, but had not placed it with the church here.
While Mrs. Allen was not a robust, strong looking lady, yet she had comparatively good health until February 15. At that time she complained of weakness and continued growing weaker each day until the end came, which was a perfect rest and perfect sleep. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal church, the services being conducted by Rev. D. T. Black, pastor. The employes of the Star store, where Mr. Allen is employed, under the lead of Mr. E. V. Buchanan, attended the services in a body, occupying seats reserved for them.
