Cherry Marie Allen, 88, a retired bookkeeper, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007, at an assisted living facility.
Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Cherry was born Birtie Marie Shelton on June 27, 1918, in Cement to Aughty B. and Emma M. Shelton. As a child, she was nicknamed "Cherry" because of her red hair. In adulthood she had her name legally changed. Cherry graduated from North Side High School in Fort Worth in 1936. She began her business career as a stock record clerk in 1936 at Montgomery Ward and Company (mail order) on West Seventh Street in Fort Worth. She was a merchandiser/buyer for Montgomery Ward in 1948, when she left to enter business college. From 1954 until her retirement in 1978, she was a bookkeeper for several corporations and companies, including a hospital, a personal holding company and a law firm in Denver, Colo.; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Indianapolis, Ind.
As a lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Cherry grew up at Boulevard Christian Church in Fort Worth and was a current member of Hurst Christian Church in Hurst.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mittie Walker.
Survivors: Husband of 69 1/2 years, the Rev. Lloyd J. Allen; brother, Audie B. Shelton Jr.; three nieces; and one nephew.
